في هذه الرواية يحاول وايلدر أن يسلط الضوء على السؤال الأزلي هل المصير أمر عشوائي أم أنه مقدر وتتحكم به قوة عليا ؟ والبحث عن تلك القوة العليا. الرواية تحتوي على خمسة أجزاء، الجزء الأول يركز على انهيار الجسر في عام 1714 وسقوط خمسة أشخاص ووفاتهم. الجزء الثاني والثالث والرابع يتمركزوا حول حياة الأشخاص الذين ماتوا والبحث عن الحكمة من موتهم. أما الجزء الأخير فيركز على ما حدث بعد تلك الحادثة.
