David Sanko, chief operating officer for the county government, said the plan is to give each of the county's 411,000 registered voters a chance to try out the new machines before Election Day on Nov. 7. The county plans to purchase 744 machines manufactured by Danaher Corp. of Washington, D.C., to replace the old lever machines that have been in use since the 1950s. The Danaher machines closely resemble the county's old lever machines, except voters cast their ballots by pushing buttons instead of pulling levers.
