كتاب باريس يمكن أن يعد موسوعة حقيقية في عشق المدينة الأوروبية الساحرة، فاترينة الدنيا ومرآة العالم، كما وصفها عشاقها، أراد الصاوي أن يجمع كل ما كتبه المثقفون المصريون الذين ارتحلوا إلى باريس، أو زاروها أو قضوا فيها فترة من عمرهم للدراسة أو الفن أو المتعة. وهذه كانت المرة الأولى التي يلجأ فيها كاتب في ذلك العصر إلى تجميع هذه المادة الضخمة من الكتابات والشهادات والقصائد والمقالات التي دونها أصحابها في باريس وعن باريس.
