هذا الكتاب جمع مقالات الأديب المصري الكبير أحمد حسن الزيات صاحب مجلة الرسالة اختارها مما كتبه للرسالة في ست سنين، وقد نشر لأول مرة عام 1940 م. وتلك المقالات التي تنوعت مواضيعها كان الزيات يصدر بها مجلته (الرسالة) كل أسبوع، وكان في عمله هذا وحين جمعها بين دفتي هذا المؤلف، كأنما انتقى من روضة أضمومة أزهار، ذات ألوان متنوعة وأريج مختلف ... مقالات يتنازعها الأدب الصرف والفكرة الاجتماعية والنظرة النقدية الصائبة، وهي إلى هذا تشير إلى كاتب جمعت له إلى رصانة الأسلوب ووضوح السياق وحلاوة المعنى وبلاغة العبارة. ولعله في ذلك متميز في الناحيتين، ذلك الجمال الذي يلمس القارئ منه ميلا إليه في شتى صوره، وتفصيلا له في جميع معانيه. وهي مجموعة مقالات تبدأ من ثلاثينيات القرن الماضي تعطي فكرة عن الوضع الاجتماعي والثقافي والأدبي والسياسي في تلك الفترة على مستويات العالم الإسلامي العربي عامة، ومصر خصيصا.
