يتناول الكتاب ملخصا لحكم أباطرة الروم من حكم (جستنيان) إلى حكم (موريق) والدولة الرومانية والنضال من أجل مصر حتى تفتتح البلاد باسم هرقل، وحالة الأحزاب الدينية في مصر. ثم ولاية هرقل، ومصر في حكم الامبراطور الجديد، ثم فتح الفرس للشام ومصر، ويتناول ملامح الفن والأدب في ذلك الوقت. ثم يتناول فترة مسيرة العرب إلى مصر وفتح بلاد الساحل والمغرب، ثم الحكم الإسلامي وحكم عمرو العادل، وإحباط العرب لآخر مساعي الروم للبقاء بمصر.
