كتاب \"التحفة الأدبية\" يصنف من ضمن المحاولات الفلسفية والتحليلية في كتابة التاريخ الحضاري واستقراء الأحداث التاريخية ضمن إطارها المرجعي العام. وفي هذا المؤلف ينطلق المؤرخ ورجل الدولة الفرنسي \"فرنسوا غيزو\" في تحليله الثاقب لتاريخ التمدن الأوروبي من تقسيمه للبعد الزمني إلى مراحل تاريخية تمتد من سقوط الدولة الرومانية وحتى مطلع القرن التاسع عشر وقد عني المؤلف بتقديم أربع محاور رئيسية هي : العنصر الملكي والكنائسي، وعنصر الأشراف، والعنصر الشعبي.
