يتناول الكتاب الحديث عن نشأة الفن وتطوره في طرائق ثلاث، فمنهم من اتخذ مخلفات الإنسان البدائي الأول أساسا لأبحاثه ومنهم من اتخذ حياة القبائل الوحشية الفطرية التي لا تزال تعيش في بعض مجاهل الأرض أساسا للدراسة ومنهم من اتخذ نشأة الطفل وتطوره مقياسا لنشأة الإنسان وتطوره وهؤلاء في ذلك يتبعون الرأي القائل بأن الطفل في تطوره يمثل تطور الإنسانية منذ نشأتها ولا شك في أن في كل من هذه المقايس نقصا يستوجب بعض الشك فيما توصل إليه من النتائج، فآثار الإنسان الأول لا يمكن أن تتصل حلقاتها حتى تمثل التاريخ بأكمله فهناك دائما حلقات مفقودة يكملها الباحثون بالقياس والاستنباط وهذا بطبيعة الحال لا يمكن الجزم بصحته.
