قصة ملحمية بنيت في مجملها على استخدام المؤثرات الخارقة لتصوير مدينة ألبانية في إبان القرن العشرين. مدينة عجيبة مائلة بشكل مهول. مدينة لو قدر لامرئ أن ينزلق على جانب أحد الشوارع فيها لأوشك أن يجد نفسه فوق أحد سطوح منازلها. ولو مد ذراعه بقبعته لتمكن من تعليقها على رأس إحدى المآذن. ومع ذلك فإنها تخفي تحت قوقعتها الحجرية القاسية لحم الحياة الطري وما يساوره من آمال وأحلام، من حب وكراهية، من أفراح وأحزان، من خوف الموت والتشبث بأهداب الحياة، من وطنية وخيانة، إلخ .. أضف إلى ذلك جوا من المفاهيم البالية القائمة على تدخل أعمال السحر في تصريف حياة الناس وجلب الكوارث على المدينة، وعلى تحريم الحب بين المرأة والرجل، ومعاقبة البنات الحوامل سفاحا بالموت خنقا أو إغراقا في إحدى الآبار. إنه لم يكن من السهل، وسط هذا الخضم من المفارقات، أن يكون الإنسان \" ولدا \" في تلك المدينة العجيبة !
