هذا الكتاب لم يقم على مبدأ التضاد بين البحث النوعي والبحث الكمي، بل قام على مسلمة أن البحث النوعي منهج يوصل لمزيد من الفهم، أو الوصول إلى الحقيقة على أي مستوى كانت، فقد يكون في أوضاع بديلا عن المنهج الكمي وقد يكون مكملاً له، فليس من فرضيات هذا الكتاب القول بأن البحث النوعي معارض المبحث الكمي، كما قد تجده في بعض كتب أنصار البحث النوعي، بل قصارى ما يمكن قوله هو أنه أسلوب من أساليب البحث العلمي في العلوم الإجتماعية التي تخدم في استكشاف الظواهر التربوية، لكنه سعى جاهدا لأن يتفادى جوانب النقص التي ظهرت في المنهج الكمي.
