الكتاب ضخم من 623 صفحة ومقسم إلى ثلاثة أجزاء، كل جزء مخصص ليوميات كل عام على التوالي (1955-1956-1957) وهي آخر ثلاث سنوات قضاها هيكل في أخبار اليوم، كرئيس لتحرير مجلة آخر ساعة ورئيس تحرير جريدة الأخبار قبل أن ينتقل ليتولى رئاسة تحرير جريدة الأهرام حتى عام 1974. تتميز هذه المقالات بتنوع موضوعاتها بين الأدب والفن مع قليل من السياسة وتقدم للقارئ وجها آخر من وجوهه بعيدا عن السياسة : المثقف، العارف بأسرار الفنون وأدوات الفنان التي لم يتخل عنها، حتى وهو يكتب أعقد الموضوعات السياسية.
