شهدت هذه المنطقة منذ القرن الخامس عشر الميلادي توافد الرحالة والمغامرين والباحثين عن جديد ما ومن حسن الحظ أن بعض هؤلاء، إن لم يكن أغلبهم، قد دونوا مشاهداتهم وملاحظاتهم وتحدثوا عن مهامهم ولقاءاتهم بعامة الناس وبالنخبة ووصفوا الطبيعة ونمط العيش والمدن والقرى والصحراء والجبال والشواطئ وحياة الناس في الحضر والبادية. هذه الرحلات أصبحت اليوم كتبا لا غنى عنها للباحث في تاريخ المنطقة وشؤونها وقد ترجم بعض هذه الكتب إلى العربية بينما بقي بعضها في لغاته الأصلية ينتظر من يقوم بترجمته والحاجة تدعو إلى ترجمته ونشره في لغتنا.
