تبحث هذه الدراسة في التنافس الحالي بين الغرب وروسيا في منطقة البحر الأبيض المتوسط في ميداني قضايا الطاقة والشؤون العسكرية ومن ذلك مبيعات الأسلحة وهما على ما يبدو الميدانان الأهم استراتيجيا وربما كانا الأشد إثارة للنزاع وفي هذين الميدانين يبدو ثمة تنافس وتنافر متناميان الآن بين السياسات الغربية والروسية في المنطقة ولكن مقارنة إلى الحرب الباردة أو (ما قبلها) يعد التنافس الحديث بين الشرق والغرب في البحر الأبيض المتوسط ذا طبيعة مختلفة فخلافا لعهد القطبية الثنائية، لا تعد الأهداف العسكرية و(الأهداف الأيديولوجية) الدافع الرئيسي للتنافس الحالي وإنما المصالح الاقتصادية أولا وقبل كل شيء مع أن لها أبعادا عسكرية أيضا.
