المجلد الأول من الخماسية التي حملت مجلداتها الخمسة هذا العنوان العام : دروب المنفى، والتي حمل كل مجلد منها عنوانا إضافيا بجانب العنوان العام. إنها الخماسية التي رسمت بلغة الأدب بانوراما المشهد الإنساني الفلسطيني بوجوهه العديدة الاجتماعي، والأقتصادي والفكري والسياسي وذلك خلال الفترة المتمدة بين 1939 وبين 1978 المجلد الأول هذا يغطي الفترة من 1939 إلى 1949 ويسرد الرواية الفلسطينية عن هذه الفترة بصيغة شهادة على طريقة : رأيت، عرفت سمعت ما يجعل السرد أقرب ما يكون إلى رواية ليس فيها ما هو متخيل يبدأ المجلد بواقعة ولادة صاحب هذه الشهادة ، وينتهي بوصول الطفل الذي كانه الشاهد إلى دمشق مع أسرته في صيف العام 1949 مهجرا من وطنه.
