يعني الكتاب بوصف معالم المدينة المنورة البارزة ويحدد مواقعها، ويشير إلى ما بقي منها وما اندثر، وتنبع أهميته من كون مؤلفه معاصرا لعدد من الحوادث المسجلة فيه، إلى جانب وقوفه على بعض المعالم التارخية التي تحدث عنها من مساجد وآبار وأودية ومواضع الغزوات. وقد أخذ الحديث عن المسجد النبوي الشريف التفصيل الأكثر في الكتاب نظرا لمكانته ولكثرة المعالم التاريخية المهمة فيه. وتجدر الإشارة إلى أن سكن المؤلف في المدينة المنورة ومعايشته لكثير من أحداثها في عصره كان له أثر واضح في كتابته لتاريخها ومعالمها البارزة.
