يقدم الكتاب أبياتا من قصائد الشاعر المخضرم زيد الخيل ففي تجميع أبيات القصيدة وترتيبها لم يكن يعتمد وحدة الوزن والقافية مقياسا قاطعا على أن الأبيات من قصيدة واحدة فالشاعر قد تكون له غير قصيدة على بحر وقافية ولكنا كنا نقطع الشك بنسبة بعضها الى بعض فيما يرد من أبيات مشتركة بين الروايات المتعددة والمتفاوتة في عدتها والكتاب فيه ضبط للصورة اللفظية للشعر بالمقابلة ما بين الروايات بيتا بيتا وفق تسلسل الترتيب وأيا كان الاختلاف فقد أثبتت صورته وتم الاقتصار في تفسير الشعر على التفسير اللغوي وفي موازنة بين الشروح وترجيح ما بينها بالأدلة والقرائن.
