كان كتاب آدم سميث ثروات الأمم، الذي نشر في عام 1776، أول علاج شامل للاقتصاد السياسي وهو يعد اليوم من أكثر الكتب تأثيرا ويعد مؤلفه أبا للاقتصاد الكلاسيكي وقد قدم سميث للاقتصاد ما قدمه داروين للعلم وتقدم كارين ماكريدي هنا شرحا لهذا الكتاب الملهم من أجل عالم المال والتجارة والاقتصاد الحديث وتبين فيه الطبيعة الخالدة لأفكار سميث بإحيائها من خلال نماذج من القرن الحادي والعشرين وبينما لا يمكننا معرفة وجهة نظر سميث بشأن نظام الرأسمالية الذي نشهده في القرن الحادي والعشرين، فإن الأفكار التي يتضمنها هذا الكتاب تبين أنه مناسب للعصر الحالي مثلما كان مناسبا في عام 1776.
