هذا الكتاب الذى يجمع طائفة من الصحف قد ضم بعضها إلى بعض فأنت تستطيع أن تسميه سفرا وهذه المباحث المتفرقة كتبت في ظروف مختلفة وأيام متقاربة حينا ومتباعدة حينا آخر حيث كتب «طه حسين» هذه الفصول وكأنه يتحدث إلى مستمعيه في أحد لقاءاته الإذاعية فجاءت كما قيلت لتقرأها كما لو أنه يجلس بجانبك يحكي عن شعراء العربية وفحولها فالكاتب لم يكن يريد حين كتبها وأرسلها إلى مجلتي «السياسة» و«الجهاد» أن تصبح كتابا يتداوله الناس ويتخذونه مرجعا للأدب العربي بعصوره الجاهلي والإسلامي والحديث ولكنها أصبحت كذلك ربما على غير رغبة منه وتعد هذه الدراسات من أصدق الدراسات النقدية المستفيضة التي تطرقت لهذه الزاوية من زوايا الأدب العربي فناقشت الجانب الفني لعدد من أكبر الشعراء متناولة قصائدهم بالشرح والتحليل البياني واللفظي.
