Overview
كانت دول الخليج العربية تاريخيا تمثل منطقة اقتصادية ونقدية موحدة في مرحلة الحماية البريطانية، ولم يحدث الانفصال النقدي والاقتصادي بينها إلا بعد أن نالت استقلالها السياسي في الستينيات والسبعينيات من القرن العشرين. ثم كان التكامل الاقتصادي من بين الأهداف التي سعت تلك الدول إلى تحقيقها عبر إقامة منظومة مجلس التعاون لدول الخليج العربية في عام 1981؛ فأنشأت فيما بينها منطقة تجارة حرة واتحادا جمركيا، لكنها لم تنجز - لغاية الآن - خطوة الوحدة النقدية وإصدار العملة الخليجية الموحدة.
