يتناول هذا الكتاب، الذي ساهم فيه مجموعة من الباحثين العرب، مراجعة نقدية لنشوء الأحزاب السياسية في العالم العربي، ويعالج بعض التجارب الحزبية في عدد من البلدان العربية (لبنان والأردن ومصر واليمن والمغرب والبحرين) من خلال مقاربات مختلفة تغطي الأبعاد التاريخية والقانونية والتنظيمية والفكرية لبعض التجارب الحزبية في هذا البلد أو ذلك، وأهم التحديات التي تواجه هذه التجارب، وهي تحديات تختلف بطبيعتها وبحدتها بين بلد عربي وآخر وفق طبيعة النظام الحاكم في كل من هذه البلدان ووفق مدى النضوج الفكري والتنظيمي والبرنامجي لدى التجربة الحزبية في كل منها.
