رغم معرفته، محمد حسنين هيكل، ومقدما بما يستثيره أحاديثه هذه مما هو في غنى عنه، ورغم معرفته المسبقة بأنه سيهاجم بسببها دون فرصة لحق الدفاع عن النفس وبأنه سينسب إليه ما لم يعلمه، وبأنه سيتهم بما لم يقترفه، ومع ذلك كتب هذه الأحاديث التي هي ليست للدفاع عن جمال عبد الناصر، وشخصيته وعصره، ولكنها أحاديث مثلت رواية مختصرة لمشاهد رآها بعينه. اختار منها وقائعها تتصل ببعض ما يثار آنئذ في الجملة ضد جمال عبد الناصر. وهدفه من وراء ذلك أن يعرف الشعب في مصر، وتعرف شعوب الأمة العربية، أن الحقيقة ليست ما أدعي في ذلك الحين فيما نشر وقيل في القاهرة، ولكن تلك الحقيقة أخفتها أقوال وادعاءات وكشفت عنها هذه السطور.
