تدور أحداث الرواية في أحياء كوبنهاجن الفقيرة في ثلاثينيات القرن العشرين حيث ولدت إيستر الطفلة في جادات الطفولة المعتمة البالغة الضيق وسط عائلة فقيرة لم تكن سعيدة أبدا وكان الكثير من الخوف والحزن والقلق ينتابها وتقضي معظم أوقاتها في الجادة الطويلة التي كرهتها وترافقها ليزا ليتقاسمان معا أسرارهما اللطيفة ومغامراتهما الشقية أما جل أحلامها أن تملك معطفا بنيا وتسكن في منزل آخر مضاء وعندما تخرج إلى الجادة تنظر بحسرة إلى إلين التي ترتدي ثيابا جميلة بقلنسوة سوداء ضيقة على تنورة إسكتلندية قصيرة وعندما بدأت تكبر أصبحت الوحدة تنهش قلبها وثمة مكان فارغ داخلها لاتعرف هي من التي ستملأه بعد ظلال صديقة الطفولة ليزا وتعرف إيستر أن ما تحتاجه بالضبط هو إنسان لا يمكنه الوجود من دونها أحد يحتاجها وكانت تحمل في داخلها حبا كبيرا وحشيا وتائها لكن لا أحد يريده ووجدت ضالتها في العمل وبدأت مسيرتها في بانغ وموللر مقابل أربعين كراون في الشهر.
