ناقشت الدراسة الملامح المختلفة لاستراتيجية توريط الخصم من خلال طرح ثلاث حالات دراسـية هي : مسـيرة الملح عام 1930 في الهند، ورفض بعض النرويجيين التجنيد العسكري في فترة الثمانينيات من القرن الماضـي، وحادثة أسطولي الحرية لكسـر الحصار المضـروب على قطاع غزة عامي 2010 و2011. وتوريط الخصم يعني انتهاج نمط من الأفعال تجاه الخصم تدفعه إلى الاختيار بين اثنين من ردود الأفعال أو أكثر ؛ كل منها له جوانب سلبية كبيرة ولا يمكن عقد مقارنة آنية بين ردود الأفعال. وتستمد معظم عمليات التوريط فاعليتها من إمكانية أن يؤدي استخدام القوة ضد المحتجين السلميين إلى رد فعل سلبي.
