الكتاب يبرز جانب من جهود الأمة العربية ومشاركتها الفاعلة في بناء الحضارة الإنسانية، ويسلط الضوء على دورها الإبداعي في ابتكار أعظم اختراع عرفته البشرية عبر تاريخها الطويل، صدر هذا الكتاب بمناسبة انعقاد ندوة الإسلام وحوار الحضارات بمكتبة الملك عبد العزيز العامة، بداية عام 1423 هـ، وعلي هامش هذه الندوة، تم تدشين هذا الكتاب ليوثق نشأة الكتابة ويتتبع جذورها منذ نشأتها الأولى، ويبين أساليب رسمها المختلفة، ويلقى نظرة على تطورها عبر تاريخها الطويل حتى اليوم، تم ترجمة هذه الكتاب أيضا إلى اللغة الألمانية.
