تناول الكتاب الأسطورتين معا فيما يشبه المناقشة الأخلاقية التي تعكس فكر المؤلف ؛ ففي الأولى اهتم \"جيد\" بالصراع القائم بين \"أوديب\"، ذلك المغرور المتطلع إلى المستقبل دائما، وبين الكهنة الساعين لسيطرة الدين على كل صغيرة وكبيرة في حياة المملكة. أما في الثانية فقد استطاع \"جيد\" أن يجسد حالة \"يسيوس\" الراضية عن إرادة القدر، المستسلمة له. وقد أحرز عميد الأدب العربي \"طه حسين\" قصب السبق في ترجمة ودراسة هذه المسرحية بالعربية، مثلما سبق الغرب أنفسهم في الجمع بين هاتين الأسطورتين في كتاب واحد.
