لن تعرفني جيدا إلا إذا كنت قرأت \"مغامرات توم سوير\" .. وعلى أية حال فإن هذا لا يهم ..! أريد أن تعرف فقط أن كتاب \"مغامرات توم سوير\" قد انتهى على النحو التالي: لقد عثرنا-أنا وتوم-على كنز من النقود كان اللصوص قد خبأوه في الكهف .. وكان نصيب كل منا ستة آلاف من الدولارات الذهبية .. وقد تولى القاضي تاتشر استثمار هذه النقود لصالحنا.. وكان كل منا يحصل على دولار واحد-كفائدة يومية-على مدار السنة. وكانت الأرملة مسز دوجلاس قد تبنتني واعتبرتني ابنا لها، وأعلنت أنها أصبحت مسئولة عن تربيتي وتهذيبي. ولكن الحياة في بيت محترم طول الوقت كانت صعبة بالنسبة لي .. خصوصا إذا وضعنا في الاعتبار النظام الدقيق الصارم الذي كانت تفرضه الأرملة كأسلوب للحياة.. لهذا فلم أطق استمرار الإقامة في هذا البيت وقررت الفرار .. وقد اتصل بي توم سوير وأخبرني أنه ينوي تكوين عصابة من اللصوص .. وأنه لن يشركني في عصابته تلك إلا إذا عدت للحياة في بيت الأرملة مرة أخرى .. وعلى هذا فقد قررت العودة ..
