أوضح المعيني أن الكتاب يمثل توثيقا لتجربته في الخدمة الوطنية التي خاضها ضمن الدفعة الثانية التي خصصت للفئة العمرية من 25 إلى 30 سنة، موضحا أن فكرة الكتاب ترجع إلى أن تجربة الخدمة الوطنية كانت تجربة حديثة في الدولة وكذلك لأنه كانت هناك صورة غير واضحة لدى الشباب عن طبيعة هذه التجربة والبعض كان لديه بعض الأفكار غير المكتملة عنها مثل أنها تجربة شاقة أو فيها صعوبة شديدة.
