في مقدمة هذا الكتاب يطرح المؤلف تساؤل هام هو، لماذا التاريخ؟ ويقول: يبدو لنا في تعبير \"تاريخ الأفكار السياسية\" أن كلمة \"تاريخ\" هي أهم من كلمة \"سياسي\" فنحن لا نؤمن مطلقا \"بالسياسة الصرفة\" بل يبدو لنا تاريخ الأفكار السياسية لا ينفصل عن تاريخ المؤسسات وتاريخ المجتمعات وتاريخ الوقائع والمذاهب الاقتصادية وتاريخ الأديان وتاريخ الآداب وتاريخ التقنيات هذا وإن عزل بعض المذاهب ودراستها ومقابلتها بفكرة معينة عن علم السياسة وبنموذج قدوة إنما هو محاولة لا تنكر فائدتها، أما نحن فقد سعينا أن نعمل شيئا آخر ولم نعن بتحليل بعض هذه المذاهب السياسية بالتفصيل بقدر ما اهتممنا بتحديد موقعها في عصر ما وفي مجتمع معين.
