يسعى هذا الكتاب لأهداف متعددة أهمها استبدال اسم (كنعان) بأسم (شام) الذي يراه المؤلف الأسم الحقيقي لما كان يعرف بالبلاد والشعب والحضارة الكنعانية الفينيقية فهو يرى أن هذه الأقوام اكتسبت أسم (شام) من إلهها القومي الذي يعرف بهذا الأسم وهو إله السماء أما الهدف المهم الآخر فهو التصنيف العلمي الدقيق للآلهة الشامية-الكنعانية التي تشكل أساس الميثيولوجيا والديانة في بلاد الشام فهو يتوخي الدقة وعدم الخلط بين الآلهة ومرادفاتها الأمورية والآرامية والعربية لأن الدراسة المتأنية العميقة هي البديل الوحيد لفهم الآلهة الشامية-الكنعانية ومظاهرها.
