بين دفتي هذا الكتاب جزء من خبرة واسعة في مجال التأهيل والتربية الخاصة يمتد إلى ما يفوق الخمسة عشر عاما من العمل والبحث، حيث أنني أعلم الآن أن الكثير يحتاج إلى المعرفة حول هذا النوع من الخدمات التأهيلية أي أن هناك حاجة كبيرة لدى المساندة (معلم الظل المساند)، فهناك الكثير من الأسر تعيش بين خيارات مصيرية في مستقبل أبنائها من ذوي الإعاقات البسيطة والاضطرابات السلوكية واضطرابات التواصل، وتنحصر هذه الخيارات بين دخول الطالب الصف العادي، على أن يكون أحد الشروط توفير معلم الظل المساند للطالب، أو أن يتجه الطالب إلى مراكز التأهيل رغم أن قدراته على التعلم تؤهله إلى الدمج في المدرسة العادية، والخيار الثالث، وهو الأسوأ، بقاء الطالب في المنزل دون الخروج للانتظام في أي من المؤسسات التعليمية، فيبقى هنا خيار (معلم الظل) المساند، المرافق، المساعد، هو القرار الأفضل الذي يساعد على تكافؤ الفرص التعليمية بين الطالب وأقرانه من نفس عمره وقدراته التعليمية.
