يحتوي هذا الكتاب على سير حياة ثمانية عشر فنانا إيطاليا من عصر النهضة تألقوا وحلقوا في سماء الفن : بداية من جيوتو في القرن الرابع عشر وحتى باولو فيرونيزي الذي توفي في أواخر القرن السادس عشر، مرورا ببوتيتشيللي وبيروجينو ودافينشي ورافاييل ومايكل أنجلو وجورجيوني وتيتسيانو وتينتوريتو. والمؤلفة هي الكاتبة الإنجليزية إيمي ستيدمان التي كتبت سير هؤلاء العظام أساسا لغرض تعليمي، وقد اعتمدت على الكتاب الشهير \"حيوات الفنانين\" للرسام الإيطالي جيورجيو فاساري الذي كان معاصرا لكثيرين من فناني عصر النهضة في إيطاليا.
