هذه الدراسة لمعالم الحضارة في عصر صدر الإسلام، أراد المؤلف أن يقف عند الأسس التي بنيت عليها هذه الحضارة وليس على مظاهرها التي آلت إليها، فهذا الأمر تناوله كثير من الدارسين ولما كانت هذه الحضارة توصف بالإسلامية، كان من المنطقي والطبيعي البحث عن جذورها في الإسلام، انطلاقا من كتاب الله وسنة نبيه محمد صلي الله عليه وسلم، وأفعال الخلفاء الراشدين، الذين هم بناة الدولة الإسلامية، هذا ما أراد محمود حلاوي بيانه في هذه الدراسة.
