يعد علم أمراض الفم إختصاصا متنوعا وعمليا ويتطلب من الاختصاصي أن يمتلك معلومات جيدة عن العلوم السنية والطبية والعلوم الأساسية كي يتمكن من تدبير الأمراض والآفات الكثيرة التي يمكن أن تصيب منطقة الرأس والعنق ويمكن أن تمثل هذه الأمراض والاضطرابات تقدم مرض موضعي في الفم او قد تكون عبارة عن تظاهرات فموية لأمراض جهازية عامة أو أنها أمراض فموية يمكن أن تؤثر في أجهزة عضوية أخرى وبما أن اختصاص أمراض الفم يندمج مع المكونات الأساسية لعلم الأمراض والتشخيص والوقاية والعلاج فإنه يتوجب إجراء مراجعة لهذه العلوم لأن متابعة التعلم في هذا المجال لا تنتهي إن معرفة التشخيص التفريقي للأمراض التي تصيب الفم وتوفر المعرفة والخبرة في الفحوص التشخيصية والمتابعة المستمرة للمعالجات الحديثة كلها تعد عناصر ضرورية وأساسية لتأمين عناية مثالية بالمريض.
