الكتاب به يورد المؤلف ثلاث فئات للمتصوفة فمنهم لا يعرف من التصوف إلا الخرافات والأساطير ومنهم المتفلسفون الذين خلطوا بين تعاليم التصوف وبين آرئهم الفلسفية وآخرون رآهم صوفيون معتدلون حاولوا الإلتزام بما ورد في كتاب الله وسنة رسوله من أمثال الحنبيد البغدادي والفضيل بن عياض ومعروف الكرخي وبشر بن الحارث وأبو سليمان الداراني وعبد القادر الجيلاني والغزالي وآخرون وترجم لهم مؤلف الكتاب فردا فردا بالإعتماد على المصادر الحنبلية المعتبرة لا سيما تلك المصادر التي صنفها كبار الحنابلة في مختلف العصور مثل طبقات الحنابلة لإبن أبي الحنبلي والذيل على طبقات الحنابلة لابن رجب الحنبلي ومصادر أخرى.
