جاء الكتاب ليصحح جوانب مهمة من تاريخ بيروت المحروسة اعتمادا على الوثائق العثمانية ووثائق بلدية بيروت. وسجلات المحكمة الشرعية في بيروت وسجلات آل الداعوق وسجلات آل بيهم ووثائق العلامة محمد جميل بيهم ووثائق مكتبة الجامعة الأميركية وآلاف من الوثائق التي تنشر للمرة الأولى والتي تؤكد بأن بيروت المحروسة كانت رائدة في الصناعة والتجارة والاقتصاد، ويكفي الإشارة إلى مصانع عرداتي وداعوق وإلى مدارسهم الصناعية وإلى الإمبراطورية التجارية لآل بيهم، وإلى إنشاء مشروع ترامواي بيروت بواسطة العجلات من قبل شركة عرداتي وداعوق، وذلك قبل إنشاء شركة ترامواي بيروت.
