تناول الكتاب أنه بدأ كل شيء قبل زمن طويل، في القرن الثالث عشر الذي تزامن وحكم آخر سلطان أيوبي لمصر و كان يدعى الصالح. ذلك أن الصالح المعرض للتهديدات المتزايدة من هجمات المغول التي كان يقودها أبناء جنكيز خان، قرر أن يرفع من عدد العبيد الذين يجلبون إلى مصر، كيما يشكل بهم جيشا قويا يدافع به عن دولته. وبنهجه هذا، كان يقتدي بسياسة اتبعها السلطان أحمد بن طولون قبل ثلاثة قرون. ومضى بسلوكه ذاك الذي لم يكن يؤشر ظاهريا على شيء، إلى تأسيس دولة جديدة هي دولة المماليك.
