يعد كتاب \"معرفة الشرق في العصر العثماني\" من النصوص الرحلية التي اختزنت في داخلها جملة من المعارف والأخبار على مستويات متعددة في العصر العثماني فهي تكاد تكون عين التقطت العديد من الزوايا للعراق إبان ذلك العصر فمن الممكن أن يجد فيها أرشفة للواقع الإجتماعي والسياسي وحتى الإقتصادي والديني، الذي يميز هذه الرحلة من غيرها إنها ترجمة عن الإيطالية وقلما يترجم نص عن هذه اللغة، ومما يضاعف أهميتها أن مترجمها (الأب بطرس حداد) إحترف ومنذ وقت طويل قبل وفاته نصوص الرحالة إلى العراق.
