\"الجوع\" رواية تحليلية نفسية تغزو ميدانا جديدا، تظهر رجلا مضعفا بحالته إلى حد جعل الدوافع النفسانية والعقلية تعصف به مثل ورقة بين تموجات الريح، البطل في \"الجوع\" يعلل أفكارا متسمة بالمبالغة الحمقاء لكنه لا يتمكن من مؤازرتها لأكثر من بضع لحظات. إرتباطاته مع الناس الآخرين هي في المستوى الأدنى ومرتجلة ولا تضفي سوى إلى حالته المخزية، ترى الحياة كما هي في الحضيض، في جو يمثل فيه اليأس نوعا من العلاج، وبالرغم من الهيمان على الوجه فإن مزاج الرواية العنيف يتأرجح، وتدنيس البروتوكولات القصصية يعطيها قوة. تبقى \"الجوع\" رواية كلاسيكية ليس لأنها مؤثرة أو مهمة في تاريخ الرواية بل لأنها ما زالت تبدو سهلة القراءة وواقعية، ومع أنها كتبت أواخر العام 1880 لكنها ما تزال حية تصور أشد حالات الألم.
