في الرواية، أن شابا في السابعة عشر من عمره، ترك تعليمه، بسبب الفقر، وغادر قريته إلى البحر وبالتحديد إلى السفينة آنتيلوب، التي كانت تستعد للإبحار إلى بحر الجنوب، وكانت الرحلة هادئة دون أي متاعب تذكر، ولكن، في خلال تحرك الرحلة باتجاه جزر الهند الشرقية هبت عاصفة قوية، دفعت السفينة بالطريق الخطأ إلى الشمال من أرض فان دايمن. وتوفي اثنا عشر رجلا على السفينة، أما غولفر فأخذ يسبح حتى وصل إلى شاطىء جزيرة ليليبوت حيث استغرق في نوم عميق. وعندما استيقظ وجد نفسه مقيدا إلى الأرض بعدد هائل من الخيوط القوية ومحاطا بأقزام يحملون سهاما وأقواسا، فخاض مغامرات كثيرة مع الأقزام، ثم ما لبث أن فر منهم ليقوم برحلة أخرى إلى \"بروب دينغ ناغ\" بلاد العمالقة فوقع أسيرا في أيدي سكانها من العمالقة وبدا بينهم كأنه قزم، وهكذا تتوالى مغامرات غوليفر حتى يعود بالنهاية إلى انكلترا ليبدأ من جديد برحلات عجيبة.
