يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى تحقيق هدفين أساسيين : أحدهما توفير مرجع لطلاب المرحلة الجامعية في تخصص علم الرياضة أو علم التدريب، والآخر تقديم كتاب مفيد للأفراد الذين يدرسون مقررات في التدريب الرياضي، أو يتدربون كي يصبحوا معلمين للتربية البدنية أو معالجين فيزيائيين. ويقع الكتاب في أربعة عشر فصلا، تتناول الفصول الأولى تعريف التحكم الحركي، وتصنيف المهارة ومناقشة القياس فيه، ثم تنتقل الفصول التالية إلى التركيز على نظريات التحكم، والكيفية التي نتحكم فيها بالحركة، وتهتم الفصول الأخيرة بتطور المهارات الحركية.
