يوضح الكتاب إن الخط العربي هو تاريخ الفن العربي والإسلامي وخير سجل لتطور هذا الفن ومراحله تمثل مراحل الفكر العربي الفني، ولم يتكف العرب بتطوير الخط وإنما كتبوا فيه دراسات عديدة تظهر مبلغ عنايتهم بفن الخط وعلومه وقد وصلتنا بعض هذه الدراسات وضاع قسم منها مع ما ضاع من التراث العربي الإسلامي الضخم في متاهات الأيام ورغبة منه في الحفاظ على هذا التاريخ من الضياع وهذا الفن من الإنحسار، قام المهندس ناجي زين الدين بجهد كبير، خلال سنوات طويلة، جمع فيها روائع مختارة من الخط العربي النفيس لتدل على تطور هذا الفن عبر العصور.
