لقد ضمن فرويد هذا الكتاب كشفا من اخطر كشوف التحليل النفسي فكما بين أن الشعور ليس هو كل الحياة النفسية فكذلك وضح ههنا إن الحياة التناسلية ليست كل الحياة الجنسية وأن ثمة صورا مميزة للدوافع الجنسية في الطفولة. وقد تتبع فرويد نشأة هذه الصور نشأن تدريجية تساير النضج النفسي الجنسي من الطفولة حتى البلوغ، وأبرز الدور الحاسم الذي تقوم به في تشكيل وجود الإنسان من حيث الصحة والمرض والانحراف على حد سواء.
