قدم الشايب مختارات من قصص زونج بمقدمة خاصة كتبها بعنوان \"عندما تنطق الطيور والحيوانات بالحكمة\"، وفيه عرج على تاريخ الخرافة، وتوقف مليا عند تناولها في الثقافة الصينية، وأثنى على الأسلوب الذي قام فيه زونج بتقديم الحكمة والدروس الأخلاقية على ألسنة الطير والحيوان والجماد، فتجد في القصص بقرة وكلبا يتفقان على الهرب، وفي نهاية تلك الخرافة تكشف لنا أن الملكية والتعلق بها هما سبب كل بلاء. تجد في الخرافات الصينية كذلك \"أشجارا تتكلم عن دور الفرد في الجماعة، تلتقي ضفدعا رديء الصوت كأنه شاعر يزين للطاغية أعماله بقصائد أكثر رداءة، تجد قمرا يتكلم ونمرا يتشدق بالحديث عن الكرامة ويسخر من القاضي\" حسبما جاء في مقدمة المترجم.
