نشأت فكرة هذا الكتاب في المقام الأول جراء محاولة تحديد الموضوعات الرئيسية التي تواجه صحافة اليوم، ثم بهدف تتبع جذورها التاريخية، ولقد أرد المؤلف أن يركز المدخل التاريخي على تلك الموضوعات، ولكي يكون بذلك مدخلا انتقائيا على وجه التحديد، ولذلك كانت نقطة بدايته هي تحديد القضايا الراهنة-وطويلة المدى-وهي القضايا الخاصة بكل من الصحافة والمجتمع، بعد ذلك توسع في عرض الحجج وفي تقديم الأدلة التاريخية والتجريبية التي تدعم تلك الحجج، على سبيل المثال، تظهر إحدى الحجج أن كل ملفات الحقائق والسير الذاتية تسبق فترة القرن الحادي والعشرين، وقد قام باختيار أربعة موضوعات، وكرسنا لكل منها بابا مستقلا ؛ وهذه الموضوعات هي : 1-الصحافة والديمقراطية، 2-التكنولوجيا والعمل والتجارة، 3-أخلاق المهنة،ethics 4- الجمهور وأثره على الصحافة، وخلال عملية البحث التاريخي تبين أن الصحافة الحديثة تختلف تماما عن الصحافة القديمة.
