كتاب (بداية المجتهد ونهاية المقتصد) يعد ثمرة ما ألفه ابن رشد الحفيد وقد امتاز هذا الكتاب بأن مؤلفه مضى على جميع أبواب الفقه من الطهارة في العبادات إلى أبواب الأقضية مستوعبا جل المسائل في كل باب، كما أنه اعتنى بأقوال أشهر المجتهدين من الصحابة ومن بعدهم التابعين وتابعيهم وتناول المسائل والردود والمناقشات وأقوال الأئمة في المسألة بعبارات دقيقة وموجزة مع حسن العرض والترتيب لتلك المسائل حيث بدأ بالأصول المتفق عليها في كل باب ثم بدأ يتفرع فيها واستدل لكل مسألة من الكتاب أو السنة أو الإجماع أو القياس ويذكر أحيانا درجة الحديث أو الأثر من حيث الصحة أو الضعف مبينا سبب ضعف الحديث وهل يصلح للاستشهاد أم لا.
