نبع هذا الكتاب من شعور المؤلف بأهمية السيرة الذاتية، وردا على محاولات بعض النقاد في إبعاد السيرة عن النقد الأدبي، بحجة فصل العمل الأدبي عن مبدعه، والتأكيد على أهمية النص. إلا أن ذلك في رأي الكاتب قد أدى إلى اعتبار العمل الأدبي مجرد صنعة تفحص كما تفحص \"مزهرية\" أو زخرفة قديمة في متحف. ويرفض المؤلف التسليم بهذا التجريد للأدب من إنسانيته. فالأدب أولا وقبل كل شيء ليس واحدا من \"أصوات الصمت\". ولا يمكن عزله بسهولة كما يتخيل البعض عن المتكلم أو عن المستمعين. إنه من القصور أن يقتصر مفهوم السيرة الأدبية تجميع المعلومات والوثائق، والاستشهاد بها، والمحافظة على التسلسل الزمني، دون الدخول في حياة الكاتب الباطنية.
