يتيح اكتشاف البترول (النفط والغاز) في مياه شرق البحر الأبيض المتوسط فرصة لدعم التنمية الاقتصادية في الدول المشرفة على هذه المنطقة. فالإكتشافات الجارية، وعلى الرغم من ضآلة الإحتياطات المكتشفة حتى الآن مقارنة بالاحتياطات العملاقة في دول الشرق الأوسط المجاورة، توفر دعما مهما لإقتصادات الدول المعنية. وتضيف هذه الإكتشافات، في الوقت نفسه، بعدا جديدا إلى الصراع العربي الإسرائيلي، نظرا إلى غياب حدود مرسومة (الخلاف بين لبنان وإسرائيل)، أو إلى ممارسة إسرائيل ضغوطا سياسية وعسكرية لمنع تطوير حقول عربية مجاورة (كما هي الحال مع حقل غزة مارين الذي تم إكتشافه في المياه الفلسطينية سنة 2000، ولم يتم تطويره حتى يومنا هذا بسبب العراقيل الإسرائيلية).
