يعتبر هذا الكتاب بمثابة تتمة لكتاب آخر للمصنف هو \"تأويل مشكل القرآن\" وهو من أقدم كتب الغريب وأوثقها ويعد عمدة من عمد كتب غريب القرآن لجلالة مؤلفه وسهولة عبارته وقد اعتمد معظم الذين جاءوا بعد ابن قتيبة على كتابه واختصروه واستفادوا منه وقد قدم بين تفسير الغريب في السور بتفسير عبارات يكثر دورانها في القرآن ؛ كالأسماء الحسنى ونحوها من العبارات المتكررة، ثم بدأ بتفسير الغريب على حسب السور وقد جاء المعجم لتفسير غريب القرآن الكريم ومرتب وفق الحروف الهجائية ليقرب تناوله ويسهل حفظه ويكتسب هذا المعجم أهمية خاصة ؛ لأن مادته العلمية تخدم قارئ القرآن وطلاب العلم.
