توالى الاهتمام بالحرم القدسي الشريف منذ أن فتح في عهد أمير المؤمنين عمر بن الخطاب، وقد ألحق به في العصر الأموي قبة الصخرة والمسجد الأقصى، وظل اهتمام خلفاء بني العباس به، فقاموا بتجديده، لكن مع الحروب الصليبية تعرض الحرم القدسي لانتكاسة معمارية، ليعود له بريقه مع فتح صلاح الدين للقدس وتحريرها من الصليبيين. وفي العصر المملوكي شهدت القدس أوج ازدهارها العمراني والمعماري ليضاف إلى الحرم القدسي مدارس وأبلة وقباب ومآذن ومنشآت معمارية بنيت لخدمة زوار الحرم القدسي، ولتعزيز العلم به، فصارت القدس قبلة العلماء الزوار من شتى أرجاء العالم الإسلامي.
