الكتاب إلى جانب أهميته التاريخية وتعرضه لفترة مهمة من تاريخ ليبيا إبان الاستعمار الإيطالي الفاشي، لا يخلو من المتعة والظرف في ما يقدمه من وصف للأماكن والناس. إذ، وببراعة روائي محنّك، وكاتب رحلات متمرس ، يأخذك الى عوالم وأزمنة وحوادث وأناس وأمكنة عاشها، وصارت جزءا من حياتة المتميزة كطبيب كرس حياته لخدمة استعمار فاشي، وأيضا، كإنسان متذوق للجمال حيثما وجده، وأينما تجسّد في الطبيعة، أو في سجادة مصراتية، أو في وجه حسناء تارقية في قلب الصحراء. ترجم الكتاب من اللغة الإيطالية لأول مرة إلى اللغة الإنكليزية عام 1955، وأعيدت طباعته للمرة الثانية عام 1985. وفي المرتين قوبل من قبل الدوائر والصحف البريطانية بشديد الترحاب.
