على الرغم من أن التاريخ يشارك العلوم الإنسانية والإجتماعية بالمادة الإنسانية إلا أنه يتميز عنها بالنظرة إلى الزمن، ومعرفة الماضي، وتوجيه المستقبل. وقد توضحت هذه النظرة مع تزايد الإقبال على دراسة التاريخ، وبرزت حاجة كل مشتغل بالبحوث إلى معرفة الأصول والقواعد المتعارف عليها في إجرائه، والتي تعتبر حاجة ملحة في يومنا هذا، وهي أهم ما يلزم للبحث العلمي إن الغاية من البحث في التاريخ في هذا الكتاب أن يدرك الباحث، وهو يستقرئ المصادر والمراجع التاريخية، ويقوم بتحليلها، ويدرك مدى صحة الخطأ والصواب في ما يقرأ، وأن يفرق بين التاريخ والحكاية، ولذلك لا بد من الإهتمام بتحليل الوقائع ودراسة الأسباب وصولا إلى النتائج، لأن المؤرخ الذي لا يعنى بذلك يتحول إلى راو للأحداث.
